Vol. 4 May 2006 No. 5

I just started watching STAR TREK with my 4 year old son this past month. (The original series of course) What a great time introducing him to something I loved as a kid – and as an adult – and seeing him enjoy it and all the wonder it evokes. It was almost like seeing it for the first time again! (although I can quote just about every line before it is said)

Being together with your children and experiencing things together is marvelous and not to be missed.

It is that way with cars too! (My Son’s first word WAS car!) It is great taking my two little boys to the cruise nights. They love all the cars, and my 4 year old is identifying many of them already. The Baby is only a year and a half, so he is still a handful at these events…..but thanks to my wife who comes along many a time – a watchful eye is kept on him. My wife complains to me that if she didn’t come I would be so busy talking to people (as you all know I do) that I would lose track of the boys! Can’t argue with her on that point.

So, a great big happy mother’s day to all of you ladies out there who keep the family together by attending events with your car crazy guy and kids!!

You will no doubt notice as you read on - we are continuing with our themed edition series of the Newsletter. This time out it is Porsche!

Enjoy the tales and articles!

We tried unsuccessfully to get the Metro NY Area Porsche club involved and listed. Many attempts were made but no call came back from the president of the club. If any of you out there are involved with that or any other Porsche club maybe you can give us a call. We’d love to have you aboard! Any other Foreign clubs also!! Get in touch with us.

Feedback

Here is some of the latest from our readers:

Pete,

It is very sad to see that a bit too many of our "special" car owners may be the ones that are killing it for the rest of us. I visit the Bald Hill and Wendy’s Cruise nights and have to say I can understand a bit of the other side... Too many clowns (yes) ripping out of the areas and even some driving through the parking lot at sick speeds.

It also seems that there are not enough of us that care about what we represent. And have to watch the idiots come and go, and sit there seeing who can make the most noise! Last Thursday night I saw a few of the locals (I presume) going around and taking notes. Not a good sign.

Your monthly editions might be a nice avenue to re-educate some people in a polite way.

Thank you,

Homer Dellysse

(Homer, you are right on in your observations about how people act at cruise nights. I have written about this several times and it is a well known fact that we have lost locations due to people acting irresponsibly and inconsiderately! To bad the culprits don’t give a damn and are not held accountable for their actions by the authorities.)

Hey Petey!

I will promote every viable and active event, but please only send me events that are somewhat established and populated since otherwise people are dismayed when they go and nothing or very little cars are there. Editing, adding, and deleting all of this takes a great amount of time. Thanks.

Hey Pete,

Just thought you might be the person to contact regarding the Saturday car cruises at Kohl's on Commack Rd.  I was there with my daughter this past Saturday and we were approached by the lady manager from Kohl's.  She was very polite and asked if whoever was running the Saturday events could please ask the car owners to try and keep the classics and hot rods closer to Ruby Tuesdays and Commack road, so that there would be ample parking for her customers  closer to the store entrances.  I don't think this is an unfair thing to ask and I would hate to see us car guys loose such a nice location.  I'm unaware of whom if anyone is in charge, so I thought, since you advertise this event in your calendar of events you might be able to get the word out to the right people.  Don't want to see this get screwed up like Bellmore Train Station and now Walt Whitman shopping center.

Stephanie and Steve, my daughter's 63 Nova

Celia Muller

(Right on Celia!! And thanks!)

GUEST WRITER(S) COLUMN(S)

Tom Sebastian is back with a story about a race car Porsche he owned that will make us all envious!

And as he rightly says: “There are too many winters and too few summers in life not to do and have it all!”

Marty Himes submits another article from his vast treasury of vintage Long Island racing. Roosevelt Raceway was home to more than just horses! There was horsepower of another kind trampling the turf!

Check out this sampling of Porsches that were redone and upgraded from Tim Browner at AutoMat.

These guys do it all and do it all well!

In the MY CAR STORY section Ted Jacobs writes about his hot and – way cool ’96 911 Carrera!

This baby is SET UP! I hope one day Ted gives me a ride in it! Maybe even …. lets me drive!

Enjoy…

                                               * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * *

  Tom Sebastian

Tom goes from this  …. to this!

I’ve Bin’ to the Mountain Top!

The car was a bit of a mystery.

I think it was the ‘55 A; or, perhaps, it was the RS.  The seller thought it might be a 1953 prototype racer.  No matter… It was the closest I ever came on four wheels to the experience of my last, flying lap down the Catalunya straights (Spain) in the Larousse F1 car. (In fact, the Porsche F1 and F2 cars of the 1950’s were nothing less than the single-seater version of the same car that I now owned.)

All I did was but sit in it once… And I was ‘home’!!  It had virtually all the same elements: That uncanny, tight feel of an F1 car, with only the fuel cell, and that thin, monocoque shell separating you from all those poor suckers in Camrys who couldn’t be in there with you.

It possessed no trunk space, would rate 0-level comfort by any standard you chose, reached over-the-edge noise decibel levels as soon as you cranked it, and had a wrap-around windshield for driver only. (Passenger-cum-navigator couldn’t even draw air let alone read directional charts!)  Doors?  Forget about it.  You hopped into it a la Steve McQueen at Le Mans.  No key, just a toggle switch for a connection and a starter button.  If it rained: tough it out, bro… No top, cloth or otherwise.

If mimicking a bullet two inches above ground-level is your idea of a fun afternoon, then you might think this ‘ride’ – if that’s what you could call it – a rather memorable experience.

First gear knocked you back into the built-in, attractive (and functional!), padded headrest.  (The poor passenger did some penance here… Whiplash Heaven!  - Best to keep a lawyer on retainer). When you topped out in 2nd you, too, had at least a sense of what the poor passenger was going through:  No air in the lungs!  3rd gear… Ahhh, 3rd!!… This is when everyone’s hair color changed (See below.)  4th brought you heaven’s door in more ways than one… If you weren’t careful here… Well, you get my drift:  Who needs the silly, Coney Island Cyclone?

                                                           …..

But why would anyone in his or her right mind even want one of these?

BECAUSE WE DIE for one thing… Or, as the continentals might say, anything ‘POUR LA GLOIRE!’

(Ok… So, one of us is crazy… You say it’s me… But I know better!  You take the Focus to work!)

It’s the only experience I know of that might stop progress in its tracks.  No Jetson-like flying car of the future will be able to do what this thing did: Rearrange the electrons in your soul !!  Everyone who rode with me looked like Moses coming back from the mountaintop when I finally let them out.  They returned a different person.  ‘Cause on this ride, they saw… You Know Who!!  (I wasn’t just starting to look a bit like Charleton Heston – I was him!  Centrifugal force grew the beard much quicker than normal and both it and my hair were smoked! – singed!! upon return.)

People in their Boxters faded when they saw it.  They realized instantly that this was the “real deal”- about 180 degrees removed from the gay-hairdresser air-rider they were cruising in.  (Owners of Miatas hid in shame, of course.)   Accomplished racers who trained with Hurley Haywood of Porsche/Le Mans fame slammed on the brakes in their expensive Carreras and begged for a chance to drive it.  (I was used to second and third looks with my cars, but screeching brakes was new to me.  I once made the mistake of stopping for milk on the way home.  Couldn’t find my car for the crowd when I returned with the goods some 5 minutes later!)

Where can I get one!?

You can’t, so far as I know.  The company that made this went out of business.  After all of my inquests, I have come to the conclusion that may well be one of one! *

If you can’t have one, why am I telling you?

Well, to let you know there are more things on heaven and earth than you think!  Where the tire meets the road there are a multitude of possible experiences.  You folks out there in love with one set of wheels for life…Take heed!!  Once is not enough!  Add to your collection ASAP!  I thought nothing could possibly augment my wild Morgan and I might still have just that one frame of reference were it not for my dream-like epiphany from the ancients:  Tempus Fugit!!** There are too many winters and too few summers in life not to do and have it all!  And when she tells you to forget it because of Little Johnny’s tuition, tell her this is the very thing that will guarantee that it’s paid!  I made $6,000 -- just under 30% return on my investment -- in less than a year!  Try that with Treasury Bonds!!

Next Time!  Still Not a Mature Adult: That’s One, Smokin’ Sedan!

* They did produce a more timid version similar to the Beck Spyder.  They sold more of those, I suppose, because people could relate more to James Dean than to Sterling Moss.  (Miata owners are more into Jimmy Dean Sausages after their “bracing” morning ride in that little number.)

** Time Flys!

(Tom, nice article! Some great snickers and references here!) (I want one of those so I can go to the mountain top!’)Pete

AutoMat Auto Interior of the Month

Porsche Interiors & Tops by AutoMat

by Tim Browner

Throughout our 50 years in business we have restored and customized

just about every model Porsche - from the original 356 to the wildest

911’s around. These pictures show just a small sampling of our work:

The options for customizing are limitless!

Here we did a custom leopard Recaro interior in a rare 911 Speedster. Note the leopard accents also added to the floor mats, shift boot and door pulls.

We set this 911 Cabriolet up for club

racing with leather Recaro street race

                       seats, modified to accept 5-point

                  harnesses and electric seat controls.

The seats are custom upholstered to match

the factory Porsche stitching.  This interior

allowed the owner to win, and then drive home in style!

Another custom Recaro two-tone, this time with roll bar wrapped in

leather to match the seats.

This 911 Turbo came to us with a black interior that we completely

stripped out to add all the white leather you see.  Even the dash was

disassembled so the bottom half could be custom upholstered.  The

carpet was manufactured by AutoMat in Porsche Sliverknit Fur with white

hand rolled leather binding.

AutoMat replaces several tops each        Porsche Boxters have a particular weakness

day and can even hand make a custom       in their rear plastic windows, which can

top in special colors.                    be replaced without changing the main top.

Here a Porsche 928 wheel that had leather cracked and torn was restored to factory condition.

Well, that was just a glimpse of what we do.

Whether you need a classic interior and top restoration, a small tear repaired, or the most attention getting custom interior anyone has ever

seen - AutoMat can do it all!

Please visit our web site at http://www.autointeriors.biz or stop by for a free estimate and a tour of our spacious facility. Also see our ad in the RESTORATION section of liclassiccars.com

(Tim and Rog, again I am amazed by the work you guys do!) Pete

My Car Story           Ted Jacobs: 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera

I bought my 1996 Porsche 911 Carrera on a beautiful summer day in June, 2000.

I was looking for a 993 chassis design that was produced from 1995 to 1998. It was the last of the air-cooled flat 6 cylinder engines. It was a low mileage car that I purchased at the Porsche dealer in Freeport. The body style of the 993 was my favorite design and is considered today by many the best looking of the 911’s since its introduction over 40 years ago.

Right after that I joined the New York Metro Porsche club and have been involved with them for the past 5 years. I have had my car at the Lime Rock race track and the Pocono race track as part of the Drivers Ed school that the club runs. Basically you drive your car with an instructor who teaches you the proper way to take your car around a race track. After a full day at the track, you can really appreciate the incredible handling, braking and road feel of the 911.

I am also involved with the Concours part of the club. I have shown my 911 in many shows and have won awards and trophies. I am currently judging in the club which I find very enjoyable - looking at the beautiful cars that our members own. I also show the car in events that are put on by the other Long Island car clubs.

Engine

Rear-mounted, air-cooled, horizontally opposed 6-cylinder; single overhead camshaft, 2 valves per

cylinder; cross flow hemispherical combustion chambers; lightweight aluminum-alloy block, heads

and piston.

Displacement • HP • Torque

3.6 liters

285 hp @ 6,700 rpm

250 ft-lb @ 5,250 rpm

Fuel/ignition system

DME-controlled fuel injection and twin-plug ignition, dual knock sensors.

Air induction

VarioramTM induction system. The Varioram system optimizes volumetric efficiency for high torque output, resulting in quick throttle response and strong acceleration.

Drivetrain

Rear-wheel drive, rear-mounted 6-speed manual transaxle.

Suspension

  Front

Independent McPherson struts with aluminum-alloy lower control arms, stabilizer bar, negative steering roll radius.

  Rear

Independent multi-link LSA axle with toe-correcting characteristics, stabilizer bar. Steering rack and pinion, force-sensitive hydraulically assisted brake system. Dual-circuit, power-assisted 4-wheel internally vented and cross-drilled discs, 4-piston aluminum-alloy fixed Brembo calipers, ABS-5.

(WOW! And WOW again! What a car Ted! It must be a BLAST to race around!! Hint..hint) Pete
